Profiled | East Meets West in Brooklyn

This Brooklyn apartment, designed by Bespoke Only and featured in Architectural Digest Italy, is a striking example of cultural dialogue expressed through design. Layering historic references with modern sensibilities, the project reimagines townhouse living while weaving in the clients’ Chinese heritage. At its heart, the richly textured EZR0226 Dark Green, Avocado & Chameleon Moroccan Zellige mosaic anchors the primary suite bathroom floor, adding depth, rhythm, and playful sophistication.

The Vision: Heritage Meets Modernity
 

When the young couple, together with their three dogs, brought Bespoke Only onto the project in 2023, their brief was simple: create a home that flowed intuitively and reflected a narrative that was uniquely theirs. The design approach sought to preserve the grandeur of a historic brownstone duplex while adapting it for contemporary life.
Drawing inspiration from both the eclectic architecture of Clinton Hill and 19th-century Shanghai, the project became a masterclass in East-meets-West elegance. Carved timber details, decorative glass, and intricate tiling balanced the pragmatic reconfiguration of the apartment, including the expansion of a boutique hotel–style primary suite.


Tiles of Ezra: Intricate Craftsmanship

The EZR0226 Dark Green, Avocado & Chameleon Moroccan Zellige mosaic was chosen for its ability to echo the latticework of traditional Chinese joinery. Its handmade quality and tonal variation shifting from deep forest to olive to jade-like chameleon, offered a tactile richness that grounded the space while resonating with the cultural inspiration behind the design.

Placed across the bathroom floor, the mosaic creates a sense of movement and layered depth. Each tile reflects light differently, creating subtle tonal shifts that feel intentional yet organic, perfectly aligned with Bespoke Only’s vision of a home rooted in history yet responsive to the present.


A Colour Palette with Depth
 

Green emerged as a unifying thread across the duplex, appearing in varying saturations and textures. In the bathroom, the Zellige mosaic tied the palette together, bridging decorative details with modern finishes. The colours feel both deliberate and serendipitous, offering a modern gesture rooted in memory and heritage.


Completed in the fall of 2024, this Clinton Hill residence embodies a layered narrative where history, heritage, and modernity coexist. The result is a home that feels deeply personal yet universally inspiring.
