What makes the Amano range different from standard ceramic tiles?
The Amano range is 100% handmade and draws inspiration from ancient Mediterranean tile finishes and traditional surface decoration techniques. Each tile is individually crafted, then hand painted, with patterns carefully printed onto the surface one tile at a time.
This artisanal process gives Amano its distinctive depth, softness, and variation subtle shifts in colour, pattern alignment, and surface texture that cannot be replicated by machine-made tiles. The result is a richly layered, timeworn aesthetic that feels considered, tactile, and inherently human, rather than flat or uniform.
Are Amano tiles handmade or machine produced?
Amano tiles are 100% handmade. Each tile is individually formed and glazed by artisans, which means natural variation is inherent and expected. This artisanal process is what gives Amano its distinctive movement and visual depth.
How much colour and shade variation should I expect?
Moderate to noticeable variation is a defining feature of the Amano range. You can expect variation in tone, glaze intensity, strength of ink pattern, and surface texture from tile to tile and across batches. This variation creates a sense of depth and softness and is an intentional part of the design. Amano is not intended to appear perfectly uniform.
Are Amano tiles suitable for walls, floors, or both?
Yes, Amano tiles can be used on walls and floors in residential settings. For flooring we recommend confirming suitability for high-traffic or commercial spaces with your installer, as these conditions may require additional considerations for sealing and maintenance.
Can Amano tiles be used in wet areas such as showers or splashbacks?
Yes, Amano tiles are suitable for wet areas, including bathrooms and splashbacks, when installed with appropriate waterproofing systems and adhesives. As with all tiled wet areas, correct substrate preparation and installation are essential.
Do Amano tiles require sealing before or after installation?
No. Amano tiles are glazed and do not require sealing, as the glaze provides a protective surface. Standard grouting and appropriate installation practices are sufficient.
Are Amano tiles frost-resistant or suitable for outdoor applications?
Amano tiles are suitable for most outdoor settings in mild climates, provided they are properly sealed and installed. However, they are not suitable for freeze–thaw environments, as rapid temperature changes can weaken or crack porous clay materials. Always consult with your installer when specifying for outdoor use.
How do I clean and maintain Amano tiles?
Maintenance is simple:
- Clean using a soft cloth or mop and a pH-neutral cleaner.
- Avoid abrasive pads, acidic cleaners, or harsh chemicals that may damage the glaze.
- With proper care, Amano tiles will maintain their beauty over time.
Do you offer samples from the Amano range?
Yes, Tiles of Ezra offers sample tiles for most Amano colours and finishes so you can see how the colour, tone and texture look in your own space before committing to full-size orders. You can request samples directly here
Can I mix batches of Amano?
Amano is a handcrafted tile range, and variation in tone, texture, and surface character is an inherent and celebrated feature of the collection. Because of this, mixing batches is generally suitable and can still result in a cohesive, natural-looking installation.
However, as with all handcrafted materials, slight tonal differences may occur between productions. We recommend that your installer dry-lay and blend tiles from multiple cartons or batches prior to installation to achieve a balanced distribution of variation.
If your project requires a more controlled or uniform appearance, we recommend speaking with our team before ordering so we can guide you accordingly.
As with all installations, final selection, blending, and installation methods should be managed and confirmed by your professional installer, as Tiles of Ezra cannot take responsibility for installation outcomes.
We strongly recommend ordering a sufficient quantity from the same batch, including a buffer of between 10-20% for cuts, waste and future repairs. This ensures visual consistency across your entire installation and avoids the risk of mismatched tones or finishes.
